Virgil James Barnes, the son of James and Mary (Still) Barnes, was born on Oct. 17, 1936, in Page. He died Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the age of 75 years at Trinity Medical Center in Minot.
Virgil was raised in the home of his parents in Page, where he received his education, graduating from Page High School. He continued his education and completed his bachelor's degree from North Dakota State University in Fargo. After graduation, he moved to Washburn, where he worked at the FSA office.
On Feb. 8, 1960, he was united in marriage to Floreen Sjorbotten in Mandan. They started their family in Washburn before moving to Crosby. They later moved to Rugby. In 1967 they made their home in Towner, where he worked at the FSA office until his retirement. Virgil and Floreen continued to live in Towner until the time of his death. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching sports, gardening and reading. He also looked forward to his annual fishing trip to Canada with his friends.
He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the Masonic lodges in Towner and Rugby, the Towner Investment Club and Pheasants Forever.
Virgil is survived by: his wife, Floreen, of Towner; three sons, Wade (Shari), of Killdeer, Brent (Regina), of East Meadow, N.Y., and Scott, of Bloomington, Minn.; two grandsons, Logan and Layton; other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services: Will be held Saturday, July 30, 2012, at 1:30 p.m., in Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Rugby. Pastor Nathan Steen will officiate.
Burial: Union Cemetery, Towner.
Visitation: Today, July 27, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Anderson Funeral Home in Towner, and for one hour prior to the time of services at the church.
