KILLDEER Construction will begin this summer on a roundabout south of Killdeer, the first roundabout on a state highway in North Dakota.
The project is to start this summer, with completion expected to occur in late fall, according to the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
Located at the intersection of North Dakota Highway 22 and Highway 200, the roundabout project is being done to, among other things, eliminate high-speed crashes and improve traffic flow.
A roundabout is a circular intersection where drivers travel counterclockwise around a center island. There are no traffic signals or stop signs in a roundabout. Drivers entering the roundabout must yield to the traffic inside the roundabout. The only way to exit the roundabout is to make a right-hand turn at your desired highway. In a roundabout, there is no stopping only yielding. The roundabout is expected to not only improve current traffic flow, but also accommodate the increased traffic the area anticipates long-term, N.D. Transportation Department officials said.
"This roundabout is the first one on a state highway. There are lots of other roundabouts in cities," said Jamie Olson, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Department. She said Fargo has multiply roundabouts in its city limits.
