N.D. Highway 23 is busy with road construction.

A project between Parshall and New Town is being done to add passing and turning lanes, said Jamie Olson, a spokeswoman for the North Dakota Department of Transportation in Bismarck.

The construction area covers about 16 miles from near the N.D. Highway 23 and N.D. Highway 37 intersection to the east side of New Town.

This photo was taken June 19, a rainy day, of the construction on N.D. Highway 23 between Parshall and New Town where passing and turning lanes are being added. Several construction projects are under way or soon to begin on N.D. Highway 23 between New Town and the U.S. Highway 83 and Highway 23 intersection this summer. Highway 23 is heavily used by oil-field traffic.

"The project east of New Town is just starting," Olson said. She said the project consists of concrete overlay. "They will be doing an on-site detour for traffic in the next few weeks," she said.

The project is expected to be complete this fall, Olson said.

Earlier this year the Transportation Department awarded contracts to two companies for the work between Parshall and New Town.

Work on the 5.7-mile project from New Town to N.D. Highway 8 is being done by Acme Concrete Paving of Spokane, Wash.

The 10.2-mile project from N.D. Highway 8, east of New Town, to near the N.D. Highway 23 and N.D. Highway 37 intersection is being done by Knife River Corp. of Sauk Rapids, Minn.

Olson said a paving project west of New Town is nearly complete with some minor work is being done to finish that project.

Construction is just starting on Highway 23 where a grade raise project is being done, Olson said.

That site is west of the Ryder corner, said Jim Redding, Minot District engineer with the Transportation Department.

Another grade raise project will be happening just west of the intersection of Highway 23 and U.S. Highway 83 intersection, Redding and Olson said. That project has not started yet but will be done this summer.
