DEVILS LAKE (AP) - Crews are installing new railroad track along a flood-threatened 15-mile stretch in the Devils Lake Basin.
The Grand Forks Herald reports work began earlier this month on the $100 million project. The track belongs to BNSF Railway but also is used by Amtrak's Empire Builder passenger trains. BNSF has stopped using the line for freight trains, and Amtrak stopped using the track several times last year.
BNSF spokeswoman Amy McBeth says the tracks will be raised about 5 feet this year. Two bridges along the route also are likely to be raised this fall. The tracks will be raised another 5 feet next year.
BNSF, Amtrak and North Dakota each are paying about one-third of the project cost. The state's share is supplemented by a $10 million federal grant.
