Two former MHS players in Badlands Bowl

Colton Razo and Porter Williams, two recent Minot High School graduates, will play for North Dakota in tonight's Knights of Columbus Badlands Bowl in Dickinson.

The annual all-star football game begins at 6 p.m. Mountain Time at the Badlands Activities Center's Fisher Field.

The former Magician linemen will join 31 other players from the state in the 19th edition of the game against players from Montana.

Montana leads the series 13-5, but North Dakota has won the previous three games held in North Dakota. Montana won nine of the first 11 games and eight consecutive from 1997 and 2004.

Razo, a 6-foot, 295-pound center/defensive tackle, will play football for the University of Mary. Williams, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound defensive end, will join the throwers for the North Dakota State track and field team this fall. Williams was selected as an all-state defensive lineman.

Other area athletes on the North Dakota roster include former Stanley all-state fullback Landon Smith (6-2, 215), all-state Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky tight end/defensive lineman Tucker Fylling (6-5, 200) and all-state Harvey-Wells County TE/DL Tucker Nordby (6-6, 238).

Montana won last year's game 34-13 in Miles City, Mont.

Metros split doubleheader

BISMARCK - The Minot Metros split a pair of games at a tournament Friday in Bismarck.

The Metros overcame two two-run deficits in a 5-4 win against Enderlin. Jacob Holmen, Chandler Jacob and Brady Lampert each had a pair of hit for Minot (4-2).

"We just battled every inning," Metros coach Travis Smith said. "They would score and we would come right back."

In the second game, 14 runners crossed home plate - all representing Bismarck Reps Blue.

"We just lost focus," Smith said. "We had a really good first game and then the second game we were just flat and they weren't."

MSU signs former WSC baseball player

The Minot State University baseball team announced the signing of third baseman AJ Begay Jr. on Friday.

Begay played last season with Williston State College and his freshman season with Colorado Christian University.

"It's great to get a kid from Williston State, it's almost like getting a local kid," MSU coach Brock Weppler said in a press release. "We have a good relationship with (WSC coach Shawn Cote) and he has done a great job with that program. We will certainly keep looking at players from WSC."

Begay was a two-year, all-state player in high school at Juan Diego Catholic in Salt Lake City, where he helped his team to two state titles. As a Teton, he hit .291 with 26 RBIs, 33 runs scored and a team-leading nine doubles.

"AJ will do a great job for us at third," Weppler said. "He covers a lot of ground, reads the ball well, he's aggressive and has a good arm."

MSU announced Friday that the new inductees will be honored at halftime of the Oct. 20 football game against Minnesota-Crookston at Herb Parker Stadium.

Individual recipients include Michelle (Boyeff) Hoff (track and field), Harry Mills (football), Ken Vetter (wrestling) and Lisa (Webb) Hodgins (volleyball).

The 2003 men's cross country team will join the 2002 team, which was inducted last year. Both teams won NAIA national titles.

Beavers ink two for volleyball

Minot State University volleyball coach Travis Ward announced Thursday the signing of two players. Andrea Soric and Samantha Ziola-Vega will join the Beavers for the 2012 season.

"We are always looking for added depth for our team as having a solid roster top to bottom is essential to compete in the Northern Sun (Intercollegiate Conference)," Ward said in a press release.

Soric, a 5-foot-5 libero, comes to MSU after competing for two seasons with the New Mexico Military Institute. She was named to the All-NMMI Classic tournament team last season and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Ziola-Vega is a 5-foot-11 outside hitter from Palos Heights, Ill., who captained her Alan B. Shepard High School team each of the last two seasons. She was named her school's female athlete of the year in 2012 and earned three all-conference selections while at Shepard.

MSU adds three wrestlers

The Minot State University wrestling program announced the signings of David Rabe, Joshua Andrews and Flynn Stormer on Friday.

Rabe, a potential 157- or 165-pounder from Minot High School, went 51-17 for the Magicians the past two seasons. As a senior, he compiled a 30-10 record and placed fifth in the Class A state tournament.

"David had an outstanding senior season in which he lost in the semifinal to the eventual champion in a tough match that could have gone either way," MSU coach Robin Ersland said in a press release. "A little unorthodox in his wrestling style, he will be a solid addition to our program."

Andrews, a two-time state placewinner from Richland, Wash., compiled a 157-39 record during his high school career. He will wrestle at 125 or 133 pounds for the Beavers.

Stormer will likely compete at 133 or 141 pounds for MSU. The Circle, Mont., native was a three-time Montana Class B-C qualifier.

"With this group and our early commitments, this is shaping up to be a strong class," Ersland said. "We will have another group soon and then will look to add three or four more before it is all done. When we add our recruits to the guys who redshirted last year, we will have some good competition in practice."
