Mabel Kizima, 88, Minot, passed away peacefully Friday, May 18, 2012, in Manorcare nursing home.

Mabel Michalenko was born Aug. 20, 1923, a daughter of Andrew and Mathilda (Berndt) Michalenko, in Sheridan County near Kief. She attended Cozy Corner Grade School and graduated as valedictorian from Balfour High School.

Mabel was united in marriage to Lawrence Kizima on June 10, 1945, at the Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland, Calif. Following their marriage, they returned to North Dakota where they lived on a farm in the Bergan/Balfour area and farmed for several years. In 1956, they moved to Minot. For many years, Mabel did housework for various people. Then for 11 years, she was employed by Minot Public Schools, cooking for the lunch program at Magic City Campus. Lawrence died in February 1986. Following his death, she continued to live in her own home for 23 years, eventually moving to Edgewood Vista. In 2010, Mabel entered Manorcare Health Services, where she received wonderful care from the loving staff and caretakers there.

Mabel was an active member of the Women of the Moose and First Lutheran Church of Minot. She enjoyed spending time in her yard, taking great pride in beautiful flowers that surrounded three sides of her yard. Mabel was an excellent quilter and also enjoyed crocheting. She faithfully joined her friends to quilt at First Lutheran each week as long as she was able.

Mabel is survived by: her granddaughter, Stacy Bearinger, Stacy's father, William Bearinger; her sisters-in-law, Dolores Kizima, Mary Lushenko and Marguerite Kizima; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence; daughter, Linda Bearinger; brother, Arnold; sister-in-law, Irene Michalenko; nephew, Todd; niece, Sharon; and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral Service: Saturday, May 26, 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church, Minot.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

Visitation: Today, Friday, May 25, from 3 to 6 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
