Change of plea set in fatal ND pileup case

April 18, 2012
Minot Daily News

FARGO (AP) - The scheduled trial this week for a Chicago truck driver accused of causing a fatal pileup in North Dakota has been canceled, and a change of plea hearing has been scheduled.

Twenty-eight-year-old Nenad Sibinovic is charged with reckless driving in the Dec. 30, 2010, pileup that resulted in the death of a North Dakota truck driver, 50-year-old Lowell Balk of Walcott.

Authorities allege that Sibinovic was driving too fast on an icy Interstate 94 during whiteout conditions, causing his semitrailer to jackknife. A 100-vehicle pileup ensued, and authorities say Balk died from injuries he suffered when he got out of his semi to help others and was struck by a vehicle.

The change of plea hearing is set for June 11.
