Travis Johnson and Megan Albertson arrived at their prom at Des Lacs-Burlington High School in true country style Saturday night. Instead of the more typical limousine, the couple chose the Johnson family tractor.
"A couple of years ago my dad showed me a picture of a couple at another school that had done this," said Johnson, a junior at the high school. "I thought it would be fun to do that too."
When Johnson invited Albertson, also a junior at Des Lacs-Burlington, to the prom, she liked the idea too.
"She loved it," said Johnson.
The red tractor required some spiffing up before it was suitable as a prom chariot.
"My dad had been using it in the field this week, but it had just rained," Johnson said, so it didn't require as much cleaning up as it might have otherwise.
Johnson didn't want his date to ruin her prom dress, so he also made some other adjustments.
"I'd also made some extra steps in between the steps so it was easier for her to get up there,' he said.
After having their pictures taken with the tractor, Johnson and Albertson headed into town, where they were greeted by a crowd eager to watch the tractor coming down the highway.
"They all thought it was pretty neat," said Johnson.
Johnson got permission to park the tractor overnight at the farmstead that is directly across from the high school and his father came to drive it home Sunday morning. Johnson and Albertson enjoyed their prom and then attended the after-prom party put on by the Burlington Fire Department.
Johnson said he isn't sure what he can do at next year's prom to top a tractor as transportation.
