Dr. Dawn Mattern, a specialist board certified in Sports Medicine, will present information about concussion at a pair of separate sessions for coaches and the public March 20 and 22 respectively at the Grand International. Both sessions begin at 7 p.m.
North Dakota's new concussion law requires coaches to be certified to deal with concussions. It also calls on athletes to sit out games if they suffer a concussion and to submit a doctor's note to resume playing.
Topics at each of the sessions will include recognizing the signs and symptoms of concussion, the risks of returning to play too soon, guidelines for returning to play, and the type of medical provider that must be consulted.
Both sessions are free. The session for coaches is open to all coaches and recreational personnel, regardless of sport or level of play. Each will receive a certificate of education completion.
