Two organizations are asking for low-income housing tax credits to provide affordable housing in Minot.
CommunityWorks North Dakota and Community Development, Inc., have applied to the North Dakota Housing Finance Agency for tax credits in a special grant round for Minot. The agency has committed a fourth of its 2012 allocation of credits, or up to $650,000. A decision could be made by Saturday.
CommunityWorks North Dakota proposes to build 30 townhomes on 18th Avenue Southeast. The nonprofit organization, which is developing the Minot Place Townhomes with MetroPlains, plans to make at least five of its proposed 30 units accessible to people with physical disabilities.
CommunityWorks is a North Dakota nonprofit organization founded in 1995. MetroPlains is a Minnesota-based housing company that has developed more than 100 projects since 1978, including many in North Dakota. CommunityWorks North Dakota and MetroPlains have partnered on other developments in North Dakota, including townhomes in Mandan and The School House Apartments in Beulah. The Beulah project received the Top 100 Best Practices Award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Governor's Best Multi-Family Project Award in 1999.
If tax credits are awarded, construction would start in the fall, according to the developers.
Community Development of Caldwell, Idaho, plans to construct a 36-unit apartment building adjacent to Wal-Mart, behind Joshua Plaza. The proposed Norheim Heights would be developed with six buildings, a community building, playground and half-court basketball. A resident manager would live on site. Residents must qualify with income levels ranging from 30 to 60 percent of area median income.
