‘Day of the Deployed’ to honor soldiers

August 7, 2011

Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., introduced a resolution Tuesday in the U.S. Senate to designate Oct. 26, 2011, as "Day of the Deployed" in recognition of the sacrifices of U.S. servicemen and women currently deployed around the world.

"Our men and women in uniform work tirelessly to serve our country and protect our freedoms, and we cannot do enough to thank them and their families for the sacrifices they willingly make. A national 'Day of the Deployed' would be a meaningful recognition of our soldiers' dedication and the American people's appreciation," said Hoeven.

In North Dakota, Hoeven launched Oct. 26 as "Day of the Deployed" in 2006, in support of Soldiers' Angels, a nonprofit organization that aids deployed American military personnel and their families. In 2010, 40 states had joined the effort, proclaiming a "Day of the Deployed."

Hoeven is encouraging other senators to support the resolution so it can pass the Senate.
