Mayor Curt Zimbelman said late Wednesday afternoon that water was overtopping Minot's dike system in several neighborhoods.
The city's sirens sounded at 12:57 p.m. when water began topping dikes in several neighborhoods in west Minot, including and area on West Central Avenue and and area near Oak Drive.
Officials expect the Souris River to crest at 1,562.5 on Sunday as releases from Lake Darling are significantly increased in the coming days.

The Souris River nears the top of the dike in the western portion of Minot, N.D., Wednesday morning. Water from the river is flowing through several streets in the area, and the river is projected to rise another eight feet in the coming days. Some 11,000 residents have been evacuated from the city.
Work on several secondary dikes continues around Minot, including near the Third Street Northwest viaduct and along Fourth Avenue Northeast.

People having difficulties due to the flooding and subsequent evacuations or dealing with other concerns can call the North Central Human Service Center's crisis mental health line, which is answered 24 hours a day. The local number is 857-8500 and 1-800-470-6968. Counseling is also available on site at 1015 S. Broadway, Suite 18, in Town and Country Mall in Minot from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Minot Drivers License office will re-open today in a temporary location at the Minot NDDOT District office located at 1305 Highway 2 Bypass East in Minot. Hours and phone number will remain the same.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association motorcycle charity poker ride, originally set for Saturday, June 25, starting at the Roughrider Harley-Davidson store in Minot, has been postponed. The ride may be rescheuled for August or September later.
The wedding for Tiffany Johnson and Pete Engh will be Saturday, June 25, at 3 p.m. in Our Savior Lutheran Church, 3705-11th St. SW, in Minot. The location of the wedding has been changed because of the flooding and evacuation concerns in the Minot area.
Kaylee Allex, Minot, and Clinton Olafson, Glenburn, have moved their wedding venue.
The wedding has been moved to Friday, June 24, at 4 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church, 1800 Hiawatha St., in Minot.
The reception, dinner and dance have been moved to the Miller farm, Clinton's grandparents, near Minot, following the wedding. Directions will be provided at the wedding.
Minot City Transit is discontinuing the west and east routes during the evacuation period. The north route will run with modifications. The south routes will run as usual. All routes will be subject to change as flooding develops. Citizens will be notified of changes through the news media.
Minot State University Summer Theatre's performances of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance," originally set for Saturday, June 25, through Wednesday, June 29, are postponed until further notice.
The Velva School Centennial, set for this year, July 2, 3 and 4 in the Velva School, has been postponed until July 2, 3 and 4, 2012, because of flooding concerns.

All College for Kids sessions at Minot State University have been canceled for the remainder of June due to flooding conditions, said public information director Susan Ness.
Other college classes at Minot State University will continue as usual and the university remains open.
