Susan Ewert, emergency services director and volunteer services coordinator for the Mid-Dakota chapter of the America Red Cross office in Minot, right, presents a May Day basket to Clark Culbertson, Junior Air Force ROTC instructor at Minot High School-Central Campus, on Monday morning. Culbertson's was one of four May Day baskets that were delivered Monday to Minot Public School teachers who are military veterans. Central Campus plus principal Bill Cox and Minot High School-Magic City Campus teachers Todd Sivertson and Gary Wenstad all received deliveries as well.
They were nominated by science teacher Mike Kelly, who wanted the baskets delivered during school hours so students would be able to see that their teachers are military veterans who deserve to be honored. Ewert said 51 May Day baskets were prepared by volunteers and were delivered to military veterans in Minot on Sunday and Monday. She received a Service for Armed Forces grant to pay for the materials and mileage for people who delivered the baskets. The project was a way to honor veterans and to make the Red Cross more visible in the community, Ewert said.
