New club for youth golfers

May 5, 2010
Minot Daily News

Hey parents and kids,

The Jack Hoeven Wee Links has a new club for kids. Club 15 is an all new club that is just for the Wee Links. How do you become a member of the Club 15? It is very simple and here are the requirements: You must play 15 rounds at $1 per round and turn in 15 scores to the golf shop staff. You have to pass a very simple golf rules quiz and pass a golf etiquette test. You cannot just buy the $15 pass for the rounds, you must play the rounds and then post your score. You do not have to be a good golfer, we just want to see that you have played and completed 15 rounds and understand the basic rules of golf and rules of golf etiquette. And after you completed the requirements then comes the best part, especially for your parents!

As a member of Club 15 you get to play the Jack Hoeven Wee Links for the rest of the season by just showing you membership card. To become a member of this fun club you have to have completed all of the requirements by the end of July. All members will be eligible for a drawing for two for a round of golf at Hawktree. Also you will be eligible for the Family Night as Souris Valley later in the summer.

So if you know of a youngster that is bored and is looking for something to do that does not cost a lost of money, this is an excellent way to spend the summer outdoors learning the game that he or she can play the rest of their lives! So sign up and starting swinging for Club 15. A special thank you to Pepsi of Minot for this healthy and fun promotion for the kids!

Some more exciting new about Mondays at the Wee Links! Monday during the entire year will be Family Day. If a child pays their dollar to play Mom or Dad can play along for free. This will just be on Mondays.

On Fridays in June, July and August kids will play for free. This promotion is sponsored by local businesses and they will be listed in the Wee Links Golf Shop.

So we really want to see the youngsters at our golf course for kids this summer. If you have any questions you can call me at Souris Valley at 857-4189. One last note, if you like to volunteer this summer to help with our kids summer program we would love to have you. Do not be nervous if you are a non-golfer or a not so great golfer. We want to make sure it is a save environment for the kids and having a few more adults around really helps.

Keep it in the fairway, Steve Kottsick

Tip of the week: Remember to have very little tension in your grip. Tension tires the hands and also you are not able to release the golf club. So if you have the Vulcan Death Grip on you club relax those hands!

Rule of the Week: You may have any other ball lifted if it might interfere with your play. (22-2)

Quote of the Week: " A comfortable stance and the correct balance are the two most important factors In low scoring" Gene Sarazen

Upcoming events: Sunday, May 9 is Mother's Day. Mom's play for free at the Wee Links and each Mom that plays get's a free ladies golf ball compliments of Souris Valley Golf Shop.

(Steve Kottsick is the head golf professional at Souris Valley Golf Course. He writes a regular column during golf season and can be reached via email at sports@minotdailynews.com)
