Catherine Haman, 98, of Harvey, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey.
Catherine was born June 21, 1911, on the family farm near Berwick to Ludwig and Elizabeth (Welter) Mattern. She grew up and attended school near Berwick and later worked at the Rugby hospital. Catherine married Joseph M. Haman on Nov. 11, 1940. They lived in Detroit, Mich., until they moved to Grand Forks in 1945. There they owned and operated a hotel. In 1947 they moved to Valley City where they owned Spike's Bar. They remained in Valley City until 1958 when they moved to Jamestown where Joe operated a bulk fuel station. Two years later they moved to Harvey. There they built a successful business that started out as an A&W Drive In and later became the K & J Restaurant. They retired in 1972 and spent many winters in Arizona. Joe died Jan. 7, 1989. Catherine remained living in her home in Harvey where she enjoyed visits from her family, especially her many grandchildren.
She loved to crochet, put puzzles together, play bingo and travel. Catherine was also known for her great cooking and the family often congregated at her home for one of her delicious meals.
