Fourth-quarter comeback keys DL-B win

By CHRIS AARHUS, Staff Writer caarhus@minotdailynews.com
POSTED: February 10, 2010

After scoring just four points in the third quarter, the Des Lacs-Burlington boys basketball team needed a boost and junior Tyler Storseth knew it.

"I knew somebody had to step up," Storseth said. "We had to put some points on the board."

The 6-foot guard went off for 13 points in the fourth and finished with 25 in the game, helping the Lakers escape Our Redeemer's 57-48 in a District 12 Class B contest on Tuesday.

"Once I get into that zone and I hit one, I feel like I can hit the next one," Storseth said.

Storseth came up big when his team needed him most as the Lakers faced a seven-point deficit to start the fourth quarter.

DL-B (5-2 District 12, 13-4 overall) cut it to six when Storseth came down and hit back-to-back shots to get his team within two at 42-40. However, ORCS responded with two Luke Sorum free throws and a steal and layup from Joel Deckert.

Once again, Storseth was there to answer the call.

He sank 1 of 2 free throws and followed that with back-to-back 3 pointers, using his own 7-0 run to give DL-B a 47-46 lead with 2 minutes, 14 seconds to play.

"Tyler is coming around," DL-B coach Doug Wagner said. "He's starting to play really good basketball. He's one of the guys we want shooting the ball in crunch time."

The Knights, as they had done most of the night, fired right back with a jumper from Deckert, putting them up by one with 1:36 remaining.

But ORCS struggled from there as DL-B center Anthony RIce converted on three-point play and Storseth followed with two made three throws. The Lakers were 7 of 8 from the charity stripe down the stretch.

"Storseth got hot and we couldn't find the hot shooter," ORCS coach Jeremy Feller said.

Dilon Wickum and Rice both had 12 and Cale Aberle rounded out DL-B's scoring with eight.

ORCS (1-6, 4-13) struggled to shoot the ball well in the fourth quarter, going 3 for 14 (29 percent). The Knights were 15 of 30 (50 percent) in the first three quarters. They were up 12-4 midway through the first and 19-12 going into the second after getting 10 points from Sorum, who finished with a team-high 18.

DL-B held a 28-26 lead at the half, but a strong defensive performance by ORCS helped the Knights hold a seven-point advantage heading into the fourth.

"For the first three quarters, we played very well defensively," Feller said. "We had a lead with two minutes to go. The guys gave us everything. They played hard, that's all you can ask."
