POSTED: January 26, 2010

Funeral services for Curtis C. Roloff, 83, of Tioga, N.D., will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church in McGregor, N.D., at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 29, 2010. Pastoral assistant James Hamann will officiate. Interment will be at the Scandia Cemetery, northeast of McGregor, at a later date.

Curtis C. Roloff was born to William and Mary (Hanson) Roloff at Powers Lake, N,D,, on April 11, 1926. He was raised on a farm in Sauk Valley Township near McGregor. He was baptized, confirmed, and a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was educated at McGregor, where he graduated in 1944. At an early age, Curtis learned the lesson of an honest wage for an honest day's work, as his father died when Curtis was only 14.

Curtis entered the United States Army and served honorably during World War II. One memory he shared was being a witness to the Nuremberg Trials. He was also an instructor in Germany for the Signal Corps. After the service, Curtis returned to North Dakota and attended college at the Hanson Automotive School in Fargo for two years. He returned to McGregor and opened Roloff Standard Station.

Curtis was united in marriage to Verena Shefstad in Williston, N.D., on April 12, 1949. They were blessed with five children. Curtis was a good provider for his family. In addition to being a mechanic, Curtis was a custom combiner and would travel as far south as Kansas. As recently as the 1990s he was still helping neighbors with their crops as he loved that time of year. Curtis moved to Tioga in the early '90s and kept busy with carpentry in his later years.

Some of his hobbies included traveling, dancing, woodworking, and hunting. He also enjoyed fishing, especially at the McGregor Dam. He loved his family, spending time with his grandchildren and taking in their activities. He was always "ready to go" at any invitation to be with family and friends.

Curtis is survived by: his children, Cleone Thorvilson, Bismarck, N.D., Carol (Jack) Gossman, Great Falls, Mont., Connie (Rod) Brumlow, Royce City, Texas, Wilmer (Mary Ellen) Roloff, Tioga, N.D., and Verdean (Terri) Roloff, McGregor, N.D.; and their mother, Verena Roloff, Tioga; grandchildren, Sabrina (Alex) Hegdal, Michael (Danielle) Gossman, Patrick Gossman, Tracy (William) Farnham, Travis Brumlow, Kristian, Janna, and Tanner Roloff; stepgranddaughters, Crissy Syverson and Melissa (Jerry) Ralph; two great-grandsons and eight stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Marcella (Roy) Olson, Kennewick, Wash., Adeline (Duane) Kihle, Wichita, Kan., Lucille Anderson, Williston, N.D.; brothers, Herman (Betty) Roloff, Minot, N.D., and Lawrence Roloff, McGregor; uncle, Palmer Hanson, Williston, N.D.; and aunt, Inga Hanson, Minot; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, William; one sister, Mary Ann Moberg; granddaughter, Jacqueline Gossman; and nieces, Jane Nichols and Peggy Pawluk.

Friends may call at the Fulkerson Funeral Home in Tioga on Thursday, Jan. 28, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. and Friday, one hour before services, at the church. Friends are encouraged to share memories and condolences with the family online at (www.fulkersons.com).
