Lynn Eugene Hysjulien, 87, of Tioga, N.D., went to his heavenly home on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2009, at the Tioga Medical Center surrounded by his family. Lynn passed away on the same day as his mother had died 47 years earlier.

Lynn was born February 24, 1922, on the family farm south of Larson, N.D. He was the 7th of 10 children born to Tobias and Anna (Stenset) Hysjulien. Lynn attended school through the 8th grade until he had to quit his schooling to help out at home. He served in the CCC's at Medicine Lake, Mont., building dams in the area.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army on February 7, 1945, at Ft. Snelling, Minn., and served in the Philippines. He earned the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Victory Medal and Meritorius Unit Award. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Tec 4 at Fort Lewis, Wash., December 7, 1946.

Returning to the Lignite area, he worked for Ode Berg, later moving into Lignite, Columbus and finally settling in Noonan, where he began employment with Louie Spooner at Spooner Lumberyard. In 1958 he began a 30-year career with the Noonan Public School System as the custodian. His love for the kids and "his building" were evident in the excellent care he gave the building. There was not a cleaner or better maintained school in the area. A testament to the respect shown to Lynn by all his students was the unwritten rule that you did not walk on the gym floor with your shoes on.

Lynn married Jewel Pommier on June 25, 1948, at Lignite, N.D. Lynn and Jewel loved to dance and were frequent weekend travelers to Larson, Battleview or wherever a good dance band was playing. In retirement he enjoyed gardening, visiting at the hardware store, an occasional adult beverage and visiting with his children and grandchildren. He had a special gentle touch with young kids, and he loved to have them sit on his lap so he could quietly talk to them and occasionally play with their ears. In 2004, Lynn and Jewel moved to Tioga to be closer to medical facilities.

Lynn and Jewel were blessed with 3 children: Bonnie (Norm) Sortland, Crosby, Randy (Dianne) Hysjulien, Surrey, and Linda (Rod) Anderson, Tioga. He will be especially missed by his grandchildren, Marc (Stephanie) Sortland, Minot, Nicole Weiler, Bismarck, Amy (Steve) Langstaff, West Fargo, Brent (Lindsey) Hysjulien, Hazen, Dawn (Scott) Nelson, Glasgow, Mont., Dani (Craig) Moen, Epping; and 15 great-grandchildren, Rylin, Macee and Tre' Sortland, McAyla and Tanner Hegre, Benjamin and Lauren Weiler, E.J. and Kaitlin Langstaff, Abigail and Mattea Hysjulien, Carly and Coy Nelson, and Samantha and Jarrett Moen. He is also survived by his sister, Thelma Wallin, Noonan; and brother, Wayne Hysjulien, Hibbing Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Rueben, Morris, Ronald, Vernon and Glen; and sisters. Ruth Hassel and Harriet Anderson.
