Doris Spokely

Doris Spokely, 74, Glenburn, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, in her home.

Doris Counts was born Aug. 25, 1935, a daughter of Everett and Emeline (Lafromboise) Counts, in Rolla. She was raised and educated in Souris, graduating from Souris High School in 1953. She furthered her education, attending Minot State Teachers College where she obtained her teaching certificate. She taught in many country schools, Deering School and later was a substitute teacher at Glenburn School.

Doris and Harlan Spokely were united in marriage June 19, 1960, in Souris. They made their home on the Mogard farmstead, where they raised small grains and livestock. Harlan and their son, Chad, are caring for the family farmstead today.

Doris was a member of the Nidaros Lutheran Church, near Wolseth, and the ladies circle until its closure. She then became a member of the Deering Lutheran Church, where she was active in the women's quilting group. She was also a member of the Jet Belle's Homemakers Club in Glenburn, Petal Pushers Garden Club in Deering and the Deering Senior Citizens Club.

Doris loved spending time with her grandkids. She would play cards and help them with homework. You could always find her reading a book, cooking, baking and canning vegetables from the garden.

Those who shared in her life: husband of 49 years, Harlan, rural Glenburn; children, Chad (Jodi) Spokely, rural Glenburn, and Tange (Larry) Stone, Surrey; grandchildren, Kyle (Alyssa) Spokely, Blake Spokely, Shelby Spokely, Sidney Spokely, Isabella Spokely, and Rhet Volk; great-grandchild, Gabriel Spokely; mother, Emeline Counts, Bottineau. Several nieces and cousins also survive.

Doris was preceded in death by her father and sister, Darlene Skaaden.

Funeral service: Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot.

Burial: Monday at 2 p.m. at the Nidaros Lutheran Cemetery, near Wolseth.

Visitation: Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, from noon until 5 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials are preferred to the Nidaros Lutheran Cemetery Fund.
