STANLEY - Kenmare's girls are a greedy bunch.
A few weeks after winning the Class B state volleyball title, the Honkers were at it again Saturday at the Northwest Conference Dynamic Dozen girls basketball tournament.
Senior Macie Harris finished with eight points, junior Erika Lemere added seven more, and the Honkers used a swarming defense to hold off Stanley 30-26 in the Class B tournament's championship game at Stanley High School.
After trailing by as many as 10 points, Stanley pulled within three on a layup by sophomore Jasmin Pappa with 1:45 remaining.
But Kenmare freshman Alexis Munson's free throw gave the Honkers a 30-26 lead with 24.7 to play, all but sealing the win.
It was Munson's only point of the game.
"If we had our choice of people we had to send to the line in that situation she is probably one of them," Kenmare head coach Jason Schwarz said. "Yeah, she's a freshman, but being the setter on the volleyball team, she's been in a lot of pressure situations and can handle them."
Stanley senior Rachel Mehus scored her 1,000th career varsity point early in the second quarter and had five of her team-high nine points in the fourth quarter to help the Blue Jays hang around.
"Rachel is Rachel, she's our go-to girl," Stanley head coach Mark Morgan said. "Down the stretch there she knew she had to go to the hole, and she got some huge baskets for us."
Junior Katie King had all six of her points in the second half for the Honkers, who led throughout, but could never pull away.
Kenmare led 14-4 in the first quarter, 14-6 in the second, 22-15 in the third and 28-20 in the fourth.
"We had trouble putting them away," Schwarz said. "Katie is a difference maker for us, but Stanley did a good job of packing it in and making things tough for her. That had a lot to do with it and we have to have some other people step up and hit some shots for us."
Senior Bailey Hornberger added seven points for the Blue Jays, while Pappa and sophomore Karlie Hoherz both had four points.
Kenmare junior Kortni Miller finished with four points and sophomore Ashley Barnhart had three.
