A. Grant May

MOHALL Grant May, 95, Mohall, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at a Mohall nursing home.

He was born April 5, 1914, on the family farm in Clay Township of Renville County, one of five boys born to Samuel and Emma (Miller) May. He attended school at Clay Center rural school and graduated from Lansford High School, where he was noted for his athletic ability in basketball and track.

Grant attended the Wahpeton State School of Science, where he learned to become an expert welder. He taught welding classes for a brief period of time at the Bureau of Indian Affairs School in Belcourt.

On Dec. 24, 1941, Grant married Norene Oberholtzer in Las Vegas. They lived in Lynwood, Calif., where he worked for the Douglas Aircraft Corp. in Long Beach, Calif., building planes for the World War II effort.

Grant and Norene moved back to North Dakota in 1946 and set up a farming operation 4 ? miles south of Mohall in Clay Township. Grant continued farming until the mid-1990s. His wife died Nov. 12, 1997.

Grant was a member of the Mohall Church of the Nazarene, a longtime supporter of the Mid-America Nazarene College, and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Mohall Church of the Nazarene. In addition to his love of farming, he loved flying. In the late 1960s, Grant earned his pilot's license and owned a plane for a period of time.

Family: son, Kenneth, Running Springs, Calif.; daughter, Connie May, Grafton; brother, Lynn (Betty) May, Minot; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Grant was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norene; infant son, Gary Robert May; and brothers, Avery, Merril and Bruce May.

Funeral: Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Nazarene, Mohall.

Family service: Today, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. at Brose Funeral Home, Mohall.

Burial: Mohall Community Cemetery.

Memorials: The family requests that you support the numerous community projects that Grant so generously supported: the Mohall Fire and Ambulance Services, Mohall parks and recreation projects, Mohall Community Cemetery and the Good Samaritan Society nursing home.
