Wilbur J. Greenup

Wilbur Greenup, 85, Berthold, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Wilbur was born June 25, 1924, in Berthold to W.T. "Jack" and Ada (Kilbourn) Greenup. In addition to his duties on the family farm, he attended country school and Berthold Public School.

Wilbur was inducted in the Army on Jan. 15, 1945, serving his tour of duty at Fort Sill, Okla., until his honorable discharge on Sept. 11, 1946.

On Oct. 22, 1951, he married Doris Deaver. They made their home in Berthold. This union was blessed with three children, Ella, Monte and Michael.

He held various jobs in the area until 1962, when he started as a civilian worker at the commissary on the Minot Air Force Base in the meat cutting/packing department. Along with his service duty he retired with 23 years of service.

Wilbur was an active member of the Berthold Baptist Church and Berthold Senior Center. He had many hobbies and talents. He loved to garden. It was a delight for him to share the harvest God provided to all of his family and friends. In retirement, Wilbur revisited a hobby from his youth, wood carving. Horses were his favorite carving item and many hours were spent on many unique creations.

Wilbur's passion for life was to love his Lord and Savior, wife, family and his many friends. He was a man of God and showed it every day!

Surviving family includes: Loving Wife of 58 years, Doris, Berthold; daughter, Ella Larson. Berthold; sons, Monte (Deborah) Greenup, Dickinson, and Michael (Rosalie) Greenup, Berthold; grandchildren, Jason (Kassidy) Skjervem, Minot, and Kayla (Ryan) Schwartz, Grafton; great-grandchildren, Hudson and Asher Skjervem and Micah and Jillian Schwartz; brothers-in-law, Delwin (Ruth) Deaver and Allie Deaver; sisters-in-law, Mildred Haugen, Marilyn Deaver, Judy Deaver and Edith Greenup; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Earl and Olive Deaver; brothers, Darell and Robert Greenup; sister-in-law, Beatrice Greenup; brothers-in-law, Jim Haugen and Lee and Gary Deaver; and nephews, Randy Greenup, Jeff Haugen and Randy Deaver.

Funeral service: Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Berthold Baptist Church, Berthold.

Interment: Wildrose Cemetery, Berthold.

Visitation: Sunday, Nov. 29, from noon until 5 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.

Memorials: Memorials are preferred to Camp Bentley, Drake, sent in care of the family.
