MSU women top Rocky Mountain

BILLINGS, Mont. - Caroline Folven scored a team-high 17 points, while Ari Hendrix added 14 and MacKenzie Mack 13 to lead the Minot State University women to a 61-54 win over Rocky Mountain College Monday.

Folven shot 6 of 12 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line for the Beavers. Mack was 4 of 11 and was also 5 of 6 at the line while chipping in a game-high 13 rebounds for a double-double.

"I thought we had good balance overall, but offensively we struggled a little bit at times," MSU head coach Sheila Green Gerding said. "We got the win but it wasn't pretty at all. Defensively we did a good job for the most part but we weren't as sharp on offense."

The win was the second straight win on the road for MSU, which also topped Montana-Western Sunday in Dillon, Mont.

"(Rocky) did a good job of keeping us off balance offensively, which played a factor," Green Gerding said. "It's been a tough trip out here. Dillon is a long ways, and Rocky is always a tough place to play, so we are happy to come away with a couple wins."

MSU improved to 5-1 overall with the win and will travel to Dickinson to play Carroll College Friday at 5 p.m.

Carney pushes MSU to victory

BILLINGS, Mont. - Mister Carney's driving layup with less than five seconds remaining pushed the Minot State University men's basketball team to a 90-88 win over Rocky Mountain College on Monday.

MSU head coach Mike Hultz said the play was originally set up for Nick Turner, but the Beavers played well changing on the fly.

"We were holding for a last shot and trying to get it to Nick Turner," Hultz said. "They denied him to half court and Jason West got in a gap and kicked it to Mister. He found a seam and drove it down the lane."

Carney had 25 points on 9 of 14 shooting for the Beavers and Turner was equally as effective, scoring 29.

"Nick Turner carried us in the first half with 19 points and four 3-pointers," Hultz said. "Mister had a big second half. He had a couple of big 3s, hit the game-winner and had a big steal off our press. He made a lot of plays."

Both teams held multiple leads during the second half, with the Beavers getting the final run.

Hultz said the result was especially satisfying considering the Beavers looked sluggish in giving up 121 points to Montana-Western in a loss on Sunday.

"It was good on two levels," he said. "We bounced back from the night before and we bounced back at times during this game."

The Beavers (6-2) are back in action Wednesday at home against Montana-Western.
