Stanley rallied from two games down to defeat Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock in the third place match of the state Class B volleyball tournament.

Sophomore Jasmin Pappa finished with 16 kills, senior Rachel Mehus added 14 kills and sophomore Shaunessy Dauwalder had 12 kills for the Blue Jays, who won 3-2 (17-25, 19-25, 27-25, 25-19, 15-7) Saturday at the Minot State University Dome.

It is the first time this season Stanley won after falling behind two games to none.

"I think they came out a little tight and were playing more not to lose than coming out and going after it," Stanley head coach Jessica Niemitalo said. "We went into that third game saying how do you want to go out? Do you want to go out fighting or do you want to give it away?"

Stanley played its best with its back against the wall.

In game 3, the teams were tied at 22, 23, 24 and 25 before Dauwalder's kill gave Stanley the game 27-25.

"We knew it was do or die in that third game, so we came out and played aggressive," Pappa said. "After that, the whole atmosphere changed. Our fans were back up, we were back up and we stayed aggressive until the end."

The change Pappa talked about was apparent.

With renewed energy, Stanley closed out the fourth game on a 7-1 run and ran out to a 10-5 lead in the fifth before winning 15-7.

"After a loss to Hazen, you want to come back and pick it up and play in the last game of the season," Niemitalo said. "I thought all of them did a great job at that. They picked their heads up, had fun and played."

Linton-HMB was led by senior Lacey Ryckman's 15 kills and three blocks, while junior Paula Nagel had 20 digs and senior Katelyn Kalberer 18 assists.

Fifth place

Wyndmere-Lidgerwood 3, Park River-Fordville-Lankin 2

Junior Moriah Skroch finished with 23 kills, 20 digs and an ace to lead Wyndmere-Lidgerwood in a 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 23-25, 15-12) win over Park River-Fordville-Lankin in the fifth place match of the state Class B volleyball tournament.

Senior Nicole Hulm and junior Nicole Mauch both had nine kills and sophomore Ashtin Wittenburg added 28 assists for the Lions, who lost the opening game 25-19 before rallying to win the next two and the fifth.

Park River-Fordville-Lankin got a team-high 22 kills from senior Lexi Erickson, while junior Sydney Larson added 17 kills and senior Cass Heigaard 11 kills.

Seventh place

Harvey 3, Flasher 0

The state tournament did not go as Harvey hoped it would, but at least the Hornets finished on a high note.

Junior Sheyenne Schneider had 14 kills and two blocks and senior Amy Buxa added eight kills as Harvey defeated Flasher 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-23) in the seventh place match of the state Class B volleyball tournament.

"We decided this morning, for the seniors especially, that to finish out the season with a win would be awesome," Schneider said. "We came together more as a team and we figured out what we did wrong (Friday). We knew we had to come out strong early and be ready to go right away."

Harvey entered the tournament with a 37-0 record, but lost to Stanley in the quarterfinal round and Park River-Fordville-Lankin in the consolation bracket.

Harvey had trouble finishing off games in both matches, but did not falter Saturday.

"It was important that we ended the season on a winning note because with the way we started out, I did not want it to end on a sour one," Harvey head coach Brenda Lang said. "We should be real strong next year, not saying we are going to get back, but we bring back a lot."

Harvey senior Jaclyn Bachmeier and junior Becca Kourajian both had 19 assists, while junior Rachel Nyhus finished with six kills.

Senior Allison Schick led Flasher with seven kills and senior Jorie Schmidt added 13 assists.
