Kenmare picked an interesting time to play its first fifth game of the season.

Even out of their comfort zone, the Honkers found a way to win.

Junior Katie King and senior Dayna Froseth combined for 40 of their team's 55 kills as Kenmare held on for a 3-2 (25-15, 25-17, 22-25, 22-25, 15-9) win over Wyndmere-Lidgerwood in the first round of the Class B state volleyball tournament Thursday at the Minot State University Dome.

"I always tell them if you let a team feel they can win, they will play 10 times harder," Kenmare head coach Tim Wallstrum said. "We let down in the middle of the third game, made some errors we don't normally make. (W-L) played unbelievable after that."

King had five of her match-high 22 kills in the fifth game, where the Honkers used a 6-2 run after being tied at 6 to pull away.

Froseth had two of her 18 kills in the fifth game and seven kills in the opening game.

"All the work you did in the first four games, it doesn't matter," Froseth said. "I think we knew it was make or break, so we couldn't let what happened (in games 3-4) affect us."

Wyndmere-Lidgerwood played tight in games 1-2 and appeared headed for a quick exit as it trailed 17-12 in game 3. But senior Nicole Hulm helped rally the Warbirds.

Hulm finished with a team-high 17 kills and had five during the final 11 points of the third game.

"State tournament jitters, playing at the Minot State Dome, playing in this for the first time - it kept us out of our rhythm," Warbirds head coach Chris Swenson said. "I think the girls would feel a lot worse about things if they had lost in three games. After they showed the people in this stadium what they could do, I was proud of how they put it together."

Junior Moriah Skroch finished with 14 kills and sophomore Ashtin Wittenburg had 42 assists for the Warbirds, who play Flasher in a consolation match today.

Freshman Alexis Munson finished with 44 assists, while Froseth added 35 digs for Kenmare, which plays Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock in today's semifinal round.
