Lillian Hazel Barmoen died at the Tioga Medical Center early Friday morning, November 13, 2009, surrounded by her loving family.
Lillian was born on the family farm in Sauk Valley Township, north of McGregor, N.D., on March 30, 1926, to Martin B. and Myrtle (Lee) Thorson. She was raised on the family farm and Baptized and Confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. Lillian attended school and graduated from McGregor High School in 1944. While in high school she enjoyed playing half-court girls basketball.
Lillian was united in marriage to Erling O. Barmoen at Sidney, Mont., on July 27, 1945. They made their first home in McGregor for a year before moving to the farm north of Battle View, N.D. Together they raised their family of five children on the farm and Lillian enjoyed the rural setting and lifestyle. After selling the farm to their son they moved into Battle View, N.D., where Lillian began working as a cook in the Battle View Steak House owned by Cliff Hanson. After a time at the restaurant, Lillian became the Assistant Postmistress at Battle View, assisting Louise Rystedt. When Erling's health began to fail, they moved into Tioga and remained there these past few years.
Erling O. Barmoen preceded Lillian in death on March 30, 2006, and she continued to make Tioga her home.
Lillian was very active in her Lutheran Faith at Scandia and enjoyed Ladies Aid; she was a VFW Auxiliary member, she enjoyed gardening and canning, and raising flowers; crocheting and sewing. She was very fond of the many baptism gowns and wedding dresses she made for her children over the years. She had a special place in her heart for her many pets over the years. Lillian will be missed by all who knew her.
