Johnny Roos

Johnny Roos, 93, of Crosby and formerly of Lignite, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Center in Crosby.

Johnny was born on June 25, 1916 in Lignite, the son of John and Christina (Bjorkman) Roos. He was raised and educated in the Lignite area and attended schools there. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theater from March 29, 1941 to Oct. 15, 1945.

He farmed in the Lignite area raising small grains and cattle. Johnny also owned a gravel pit on the outskirts of Lignite that is still producing gravel today. He was very proud of his Swedish heritage.

He married Thelma (Berg) Sorum on Dec. 17, 1961 in Lignite. Together they farmed and traveled in the winters. Johnny retired in 1984. When they retired they moved to Minot. They went to Arizona, California, Florida, Alaska and even to Norway and Sweden. Johnny was a 50-plus years member of the Monson Finkenhagen American Legion Post #35 and also a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church in Lignite. He also enjoyed playing cards.

Johnny was preceded in death: by his parents; one sister, Hildur Halass; three brothers, Edwin, Alex and Arthur.

He is survived by: one sister, Margaret Sandberg of Oregon; stepchildren, Kenneth (Joan) Sorum of Crosby, Neil (Ruth) Sorum of Lebanon, Ohio and Gordon Sorum of Minot; stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be: Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Lignite.

Burial will follow: at Tonset Cemetery in rural Lignite with military honors provided by Monson Finkenhagen American Legion Post #35.

Visitation: will be Monday, Nov. 9, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Stakston-Martin Funeral Home in Crosby and also one hour before the service at the church.

Stakston-Martin Funeral Home of Crosby is in charge of arrangements.
