Gordon Hannesson

Gordon Duaine Hannesson, 79, Minot, and formerly of Bottineau, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, in a Minot hospital.

Gordon was born Aug. 13, 1930, in Bottineau, to Freeman and Marie (Hillman) Hannesson. He was reared in Bottineau and graduated from Bottineau High School in 1948.

He attended the North Dakota School of Forestry in Bottineau and North Dakota State University prior to enlisting in the Army. He served stateside at Fort Lewis, Wash., during the Korean conflict and later served in the National Guard. He continued his education at Minot State University, where he received a degree in business administration.

Gordon married Sylvia Jundt on Sept. 20, 1965, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Minot. They made their home in Minot, where Gordon was employed by the U.S. Postal Service from 1964 until his retirement in 1998. They had continued to reside in Minot, most recently at The View.

Gordon was the secretary/treasurer of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, treasurer of the Icelandic Society, an active member of the American Legion and past president of the American Postal Workers Union local. In his leisure time he enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing pinochle and cribbage and listening to classical music.

Gordon's loving family includes: his wife of 44 years, Sylvia; children, Lisa (Peter) Higley, of Seattle, and Steve Hannesson, of Phoenix; granddaughter: Sophia Higley; brother, Leo (Connie) Hannesson, of Crookston, Minn.; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Bradley and Forrest Hannesson.

Funeral service: Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Our Redeemer's Lutheran Brethren Church, Minot.

Interment: Will be in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation: Thursday, Nov. 5, from 2 to 7 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
