Within the first few minutes of the match, it was apparent that Des Lacs-Burlington was in for a long evening, or a short one, depending on how you look at it.
Kenmare played well from the opening serve of Monday's District 12 volleyball semifinal, winning 14 of the first 20 points. The Honkers wound up winning the first game 25-13 before cruising to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-7, 25-15) win in about 45 minutes at Our Redeemer's Christian School's gymnasium.
It was a marked improvement over the Honkers' opening-round win over Surrey Friday.
"We wanted to make it to the championship so we worked hard and played well together," said Kenmare middle Katie King, who finished with a match-high 10 kills and four blocks. "We knew we had to come out and play our game, get our passing, get our hits, get our sets and just work together."
Des Lacs-Burlington rarely had a chance to set up its offense due to Kenmare's well-placed serves. Macie Harris led the Honkers with three aces, while Dayna Frosth had two aces, King one and Meghan Essler one. There were even more non-ace serves that led directly to points for the Honkers.
"We don't serve for aces, we serve so that we can get the ball back," Kenmare head coach Tim Wallstrum said. "If you serve for aces you miss too many. We want to make it hard enough for them not to be able to set the ball so we can get it back. That's our game."
Lexie Munson finished with 26 assists, while Froseth added six kills and nine digs for the Honkers, who advance to today's championship match against Our Redeemer's.
Des Lacs-Burlington got six kills from Brianna Johnson and three kills from Brittany Holte, while Deidre Karhoff put in 11 assists. The Lakers will play Glenburn today for a spot in the Region 6 Tournament.
Our Redeemer's 3, Lewis & Clark 0
Our Redeemer's came out firing on all cylinders in its semifinal match against Lewis & Clark.
The Knights jumped out to a 10-2 lead on the way to winning opening game 25-10. From there, it was a bit of a struggle, but the Knights played well enough to sweep the Bombers 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-15).
"I think the girls were just out to prove in the first game that they could play a much better game. They were really disappointed in their play Friday," Knights head coach Sherry Carlson said. "They had the weekend to think about it and they were saying all day long that it is going to be different."
Lewis & Clark built an 18-15 lead in the second game before the Knights rallied to win the next six points with Sarah Christopher serving. They never looked back after that.
"It is tough when you come out that strong to be able to keep that momentum," Carlson said. "But then we talked about playing hard all the time, prepare for (today) a little bit. Don't let anything hit the floor. Then we came around and recovered in the third game."
Ashley Koppinger finished with a team-high eight kills for the Knights, while Mataya Grigsby had seven kills and Courtney Jacobsen four kills.
Lewis & Clark, which plays Bishop Ryan for a spot in the region tournament, got six kills from Amanda Pipe and five kills from Megan Limke.
Bishop Ryan 3, Surrey 0
Maci Severson had four aces in the first eight points as Bishop Ryan topped Surrey 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-13) in a loser-out match of the District 12 Tournament.
Severson finished with five aces for the Lions, while Ashton Hager had six aces and Katelyn Backes seven kills. Severson added 17 assists and Hannah Lewis finished with seven digs for the Lions, who will play Lewis & Clark today in a region play-in match.
Surrey got six kills from Leah Parizek, six assists from Kayla Nelsen and 13 digs from Julie Johnson. Surrey's Lindsey Mogard left the court with four aces, a team high.
Glenburn 3, MLS 1
Ashley Matson had a team-high 15 kills and Meghan Lavachek recorded 38 assists as Glenburn lived to play another day with a 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-13, 25-19) win over Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood in a loser-out game of the District 12 Tournament.
Kiah Smith added 29 digs and Taylor Cunningham served up two aces for the Panthers, who will play Des Lacs-Burlington in a region play-in game today.
Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood got 15 kills from Jackie Miller, 20 assists from Jorden Brown and four blocks from Summer Romine.
