First District Health Unit cancels H1N1 vaccine clinic
By KATINA TENGESDAL, Staff Writer ktengesdal@minotdailynews.comFirst District Health Unit of Minot canceled a scheduled H1N1 vaccine clinic Wednesday after 20 vials of injectable vaccine were frozen due to a malfunctioning refrigerator.
"In our recent shipment, only the injectable vaccine was affected. We aren't sure if we're getting any replacement vaccine at this time," said Penny Hamilton, RN, director of nursing for First District Health Unit.
First District still has the H1N1 vaccine available in the nasal spray (FluMist) form. An additional H1N1 vaccination clinic has been scheduled for Friday at the Minot Municipal Auditorium from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Friday's clinic will be limited to healthy parents and siblings of infants under 6 months old and healthy children 2 through 4 years old. The vaccination will be done on a walk-in basis, with no appointments taken. There is no charge for the vaccine.
Nasal spray vaccine can only be given to healthy people 2 to 49 years of age, and cannot be given within 30 days of another live vaccine, such as seasonal FluMist, chickenpox vaccine, or MMR. Nasal spray vaccine is not suitable for those with underlying conditions such as asthma or diabetes, or for pregnant women.
At this time, no H1N1 vaccinations are being given at the First District Health Unit offices.
