Randy Westby has a pair of Minnesota Vikings golf shoes he only wears on special occasions.
He could not think of a better time to bring them out than during the final round of the Minot All City Championship, held Sunday at Minot Country Club.
"The worst score I ever shot with these shoes is 74 - believe it or not," Westby said. "People razz me all the time and, you know, it is kind of one of those things."
The shoes did not fail Westby as he tallied a final-round 71 to finish the two-day tournament in 148 strokes, one better than runner-up David Buen.
"David beat me by a stroke last year so it was good to get this one," Westby said.
Westby began the day three strokes behind leader Kelen Hunter, who shot a 74 during the first round Saturday at Souris Valley Golf Course. It took a while for Westby to find his rhythm as he double bogeyed the second hole to move to 2-over par.
"I three putted from four feet - a tough downhill putt," he said.
Westby clawed his way back to even with birdies on holes five and six, but dropped a shot with a bogey on seven. Birdies on nine and 10 got Westby to 1-under and from there he parred out to win his first Minot All City Championship.
"I made a couple good saves, but all around played really solid," he said. "I usually play Souris (Valley Golf Course) better than I play here to be honest with you, but Souris was tough (Saturday). Everyone struggled a little bit (Saturday)."
Westby, who only wears the Vikings shoes on Sundays, has been playing golf for 30 years and is the vice president of the North Dakota Golf Association. He won Rugby's city golf tournament at the beginning of April and finished second at Minot Country Club's tournament.
"I play a lot of tournaments and normally finish somewhere in the middle. I'm competitive usually, so I'm pretty happy with this win," Westby said.
Hunter finished in third after recording a 77 Sunday, while Zane Young took fourth after shooting a 73 Sunday - the second best round of the day behind Westby.
Nadane Johnson was the All City Ladies Gross champion after firing a 79 Sunday and an 87 Saturday.
"I hit three balls in the water (Saturday) and I didn't putt very well. I just didn't have the good feeling," Johnson said. "(Sunday) the back nine really came together. I started hitting the ball really well and getting it close to the pin."
Elayne Lindquist finished as the All City Ladies Net champion with net scores of 70 Saturday and 74 Sunday.
"I called that a miracle because I haven't played all that much this summer," Lindquist said. "I had some trouble with my back so I've had a rough time this summer. But for two days I managed to pull it out somehow."
