MCHENRY Russell Thompson, 86, Carrington, formerly of McHenry, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, in a Carrington nursing home.

He was born Sept. 8, 1922, to Raynard and Etta Thompson in Eastman Township, Foster County. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in October 1942 and was called to active duty in April 1943. He served in the Philippines and Leyte Island in 1944 and was discharged in 1946. He married Solveig Stangeland in 1952 in Moorhead, Minn.

Survivors: daughters, Jacki Black, Bakersfield, Calif., Penny Lowe, Alburnett, Iowa; sons, Lyndon, Carrington, Scott, Estelline, S.D.; six grandchildren; sister, Pat Froelich, Silvergate, Mont.

Memorial service: Monday, 11 a.m., Our Savior's Lutheran Church, McHenry.

Burial: Monday, 1:30 p.m., James River Cemetery, rural Grace City.

Visitation: Sunday, 2 to 5 p.m., in Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.
