Adeline Anderson
June 23, 1928-Aug. 20, 2009Adeline I. Anderson, 81, died Thursday, Aug. 20, in the Garrison Hospital from heart failure. A memorial service will be held Monday, Aug. 24, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan. Friends may sign a memorial book today, Aug. 23, from noon to 6 p.m., at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.
She was born June 23, 1928, to Edward and Rebecca Wisland in Minot. She grew up in Estevan and Weyburn, Sask., Canada. Her family returned to Minot, where Adeline graduated from Minot High School in 1946. She attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse in 1949.
Adeline married John Edward "Jack" Callahan in 1950 and they had two children, John and Colleen. She was widowed in 1954 when Jack died in a fall during construction of Garrison Dam.
Adeline married Winston Anderson of Ryder in 1958, where they made their home until moving to Garrison in 1978. They had one child, Vicki. Adeline returned to her nursing career in 1974, working at the Garrison Nursing Home until her retirement in 1984.
Adeline enjoyed the traveling that she and Winston were able to do before his death and she continued to make trips back to Canada, to Minneapolis and to Houston to visit family and friends.
Adeline was a member of the Community Chest in Garrison. She was a very active and supportive member of the Garrison American Legion Auxiliary, serving as its president for 20 years. A trip to Hawaii for the National American Legion Convention was a highlight of her Auxiliary experiences. She made many friends through the Legion Auxiliary who she enjoyed seeing each year at the State Legion Convention.
Adeline is survived by: her three children, John Anderson (Jonette), Houston, Texas, Colleen Learned (Tim), Cando, N.D., and Vicki Anderson, Eagan, Minn.; and two grandchildren, Aaron Anderson in Defiance, Ohio, and Kristi Conrad (Dustin) in Lancaster, Ohio; and great-granddaughter Kityana.
Adeline was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Thora Dunn, and husbands, Jack Callahan and Winston Anderson.
Her family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the Garrison Hospital staff and to the Hospice nurses.
