Donald Lies

NEW ROCKFORD Donald Herman Lies, 89, New Rockford, died Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, in his home.

He was born Jan. 31, 1920, to Lawrence and Martha Lies near Bremen. He enlisted in the Navy in August 1940. He completed basic training at Great Lakes, Mich., and was assigned to the U.S.S. Yorktown at Pearl Harbor. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was sent back to patrol duty in the Pacific and then was assigned to do salvage and repair on the U.S.S. West Virginia which had been sunk at Pearl Harbor. He also served in the Philippines and at the Naval Air Station on Samar Islands. He was discharged in August 1946. He married Barbara Hitz Oct. 12, 1953.

Survivors: wife; daughters, Jo Ann Berg, West Fargo, Jennifer Lies, of Horace; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathryn Lies and Clara Vanzura, both Albuquerque, N.M., and Mary Ellen Thurman, Tigard, Ore.

Funeral: Saturday, 10:30 a.m., St. John's Catholic Church, New Rockford.

Burial: Saturday, 12:45 p.m., St. Joseph's Cemetery, rural Bremen.

Prayer service: Friday, 7 p.m., in the church.

Visitation: Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.
