Donald Magandy
Sept. 30, 1927-July 30, 2009Donald Magandy, 81, Ryder, died Thursday, July 30, 2009, in a Bismarck hospital. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Aug. 3, at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Douglas. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery in Ryder, Monday at 4 p.m. Visitation will be held Sunday, Aug. 2, from 3 to 8 p.m., at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.
Donald was born Sept. 30, 1927, to Rufus and Anna (Lenaburg) Magandy on their Ryder farmstead, where he was raised and educated. Following school, Donald enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Nov. 16, 1946, and attended boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Training in February 1947. After graduation he went to San Diego, Calif., to sheet metal school for 18 weeks.
In September 1947, he was sent to Guam and returned in January 1948, when he was sent to Alameda, Calif., where he boarded the USS Tarawa CV40 and made the world cruise in 1948-1949. He decommissioned the carrier in March 1949. He then went to Key West, Fla., to the Subtender Gilmore in June 1949 to October 1951 before being honorably discharged at Norfolk, Va.
Following his discharge, Donald returned to the farm and on June 18, 1955, married Grace Marie Zethren at Trinity Lutheran Church in Douglas, N.D. They farmed from 1952 to 2004 and Donald worked construction during slower times of the farming season.
Donald is survived by: his wife of 54 years, Grace; sons, Alvin (Joetta) Magandy, Clinton (Bonnie) Magandy; daughter, Barbara (Ted) Power; grandchildren, Christopher (friend Carrie) Magandy, Jessica Magandy, Misty (James) Hagen, Monica Magandy, Terri (friend Justin) Blake, Bobby (friend Ashley) Blake, Jazmine Power; great-grandson, Andrew Hagen; stepgranddaughter, Julie (Ed) Sanchez; stepgrandsons, Robert and Raymond Power; stepgreat-grandchildren, Donald, Anna, Deann, and Christopher Sanchez; brother, Roland (Mona) Magandy; sisters, Ruth Becker, Grace Jones, Irene Travis, Fern Magandy, and Eunice Volk; nephews, Clifford Ruden, Karl (Connie) Schilling, Dale (Merna) Magandy, Russell (Kim) Magandy, Robert (Stacey) Magandy; nieces, Darlene (Rollyn) Dorenkamper, Cheryl (Al) Roth, Joann (Fred) Schapp, Ronda (Jesse) Pedersen; and countless cousins and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Denise; brothers, Walter and Elmer Magandy; sister, Ethel Schilling; sister-in-law, Lucille Magandy; brothers-in-law, Edward Schilling, Oscar Travis, Vincent Volk, Walter Jones and Francis Becker; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clifford and Josephine Zethren; nephews, Glenn Schilling, Rodney Volk and Robert Volk and Gerald Magandy; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
