Gertrude Getzlaff

Gertrude Getzlaff, age 100, of Minot, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at a Minot nursing home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 30, at 2 p.m. at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Willow City. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Gardena. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 29, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon in Nero Funeral Home of Bottineau.

Gertrude Getzlaff, a daughter of Otto and Emilie (Thom) Brandt, was born at Gardena on June 23, 1909. When she was two years old she moved to Canada. At the age of 18 she returned to Gardena.

On Nov. 3, 1927, she was married to Otto Getzlaff at Bottineau. They lived on a farm near Gardena and later moved to Willow City. She worked at local restaurants in Willow City and as a cook at the International Music Camp. Otto Getzlaff passed away on Sept. 11, 1966. Gertrude continued to make her home in Willow City until she moved to Minot in 2006, where she had remained since.

She was well known for her sewing skills, and made garments for many people. She loved to garden and was well known for growing cabbage and always having beautiful flowers. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Willow City. Gertrude was a member of the Willow City Lyle B. Rich American Legion Auxiliary Post.

She is survived by: sons, Marvin (Lavona) Getzlaff, Marnel (Bud) Getzlaff, Dale (Carol) Getzlaff and Allen (Ruth) Getzlaff, all of Minot, Larry (Charlotte) Getzlaff of Maple Valley, Wash., and Dennis (Val) Getzlaff of Riverdale, N.D.; daughters, Doris (Alvin) Senger of Black Hawk, S.D., Shirley Brown of Colorado, Mary (Tom) Mack of Papillion, Neb., Judy (Phil) Brossart of Jamestown and Debra Anderson of Austin, Texas; 23 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Otto; infant son Roy Robert; a grandson Brent Brown; great-grandson Garret Getzlaff, great-granddaughter Angel Getzlaff; daughter-in-law, Doris (Carlson) Getzlaff; and all of her brothers and sisters.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorials to be given to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Willow City.
