BRIEFS - Independence Day events planned for Int’l Music Camp

INTERNATIONAL PEACE GARDEN Celebrate Independence Day with International Music Camp activities in the International Peace Garden Friday and Saturday. The Old-Fashioned Band Concert and Ice Cream Social will be held Friday at 8 p.m. in the Burdick Center for the Performing Arts. The International Music Camp Faculty Band will present traditional music, including marches, pop tunes and works for the concert band. Erica Neidlinger, Brent Ghiglione and Tim Wollenzien will conduct the band composed of professional players, educators and administrative staff. The guest soloist is Adam Frey, euphonium artist from Cummings, Ga. Pride Dairy of Bottineau, sponsor the event, will sell ice cream cones during the concert.

International Music Camp students will present what they've been learning Saturday. An art and digital photography exhibit opens at 10 a.m. in the Alme International Arts Centre, followed by the Garage Band program at 11 a.m. in the Burdick Center, the band concert at 1:30 p.m. in the Masonic Memorial Auditorium, and a drama/ improv production at 2 p.m. in the Burdick Center for Performing Arts.

Northwest Art Center group receives grant funding

Art Friends of the Northwest Art Center, Minot, was awarded a $7,353 institutional support grant by the North Dakota Council on the Arts.

Art Friends, the advisory and support organization of the Northwest Art Center, was among 57 recipients of institutional support funding. The institutional support program is designed to benefit artists, arts organizations, and the general public. The program provides general support for qualifying arts and cultural organizations that have proven they have strong management and leadership, quality artistic programming and services, and are an important part of the arts infrastructure in their communities. A total of $420,948 was awarded during this grant round.

The grant will help to provide funds for the Northwest Art Center's two galleries, the Hartnett Hall Gallery and Gordon B. Olson Library Gallery at Minot State University, and for the Northwest Art Center Lecture Series.

The center's galleries focus on exhibitions by contemporary artists. About 20 exhibits are presented each year, featuring a cross-section of local, regional and national talent. Lecture series speakers include MSU faculty, regional lecturers, and visiting scholars. All exhibitions and lectures are free and open to the public.

The North Dakota Council on the Arts is the state agency responsible for the support and development of the arts throughout North Dakota, and is funded by the state Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

'Elmo's Green Thumb' to take the stage in Bismarck

BISMARCK Join all your favorite Sesame Street friends on an amazing adventure as they help Elmo find a new home for his friend Sunny, the sunflower, during three performances of "Elmo's Green Thumb" in August in the Bismarck Civic Center.
