Joan ‘Joanie’ Faris
March 13, 1947-June 23, 2009Joan "Joanie" Lillian (Brett) Faris died on Tuesday, June 23rd, at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. Funeral services for Joanie will be on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Bowman United Methodist Church in Bowman, ND. Pastor Val Rush will officiate with burial to follow in the Bowman Cemetery. There will be a Family and Friends service today, June 30, at 7 p.m. at the Krebsbach Funeral Home Chapel, Bowman.
Joan Lillian Brett was born March 13, 1947, in Moorhead, MN, to Milton and Virginia (Saul) Brett. Joanie grew up in Fargo, ND, and graduated from Fargo Central High School. She then worked at Black's Department Store.
Joanie met Gary Faris when he worked for Milton Brett Trucking. They dated for two years before they were married in St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Fargo, on October 26, 1969. Gary then enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Pirmasens, Germany, and their daughter Jennine was born on March 9, 1971, in Landstuhl, Germany. Gary and Joanie then returned to the states in 1972 and moved to McKinney, TX, where their son Kenny was born on February 6, 1975. Joanie and Gary relocated to Montana, where Gary worked for the U.S. Post Office in Billings, Jordan, and Gardiner.
Gary retired in 2000 and they moved to Burlington, ND, and Joanie worked for the J C Penney store in Minot, ND, for five years. In May 2007 Joanie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and over Memorial Day weekend 2008 they moved to Deer Creek, MN.
Joanie and Gary were a part of the Dakota Cruisers Car Club in Minot. Joanie enjoyed traveling to visit family including a yearly camping trip to visit Jennine's family in the Rocky Mountains, spending time with her children and grandchildren, many different crafts, and genealogy.
Joanie fought a courageous battle with brain cancer.
She is survived by: her daughter Jennine, husband Ken Cook and children Kenny, Kalvin, Jessica, and Julia from Bozeman, MT; her son Kenny and expectant wife Kristin Faris from Burlington, ND; brother James Brett, Wisconsin, Robert (Sharon) Brett, Rochert, MN; twin sister Janice (Martin) Johnson, Moorhead, MN; and sister Judy (Doug) Smith, Fargo; mother-in-law Marie Faris of Bowman, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years Gary, her mother Virginia, her father Milton, and brothers David Allen and baby boy Brett.
