Homer Hiller

Homer Elgin Hiller, 82, Glen Ullin, and formerly of Granville and Velva, died on Thursday, June 25, 2009, in a Bismarck hospital.

Homer was born on Dec. 4, 1926, in Simcoe, to Harry and Mathilda (Everson) Hiller. He was reared in Granville and graduated from Granville High School. He served in the U.S. Army with the 1st Cavalry Division from 1945 until 1947.

Homer married Doris Hillerud on Oct. 26, 1947, at the Hillerud family farm near Norwich. They made their home in Granville where he assisted his father in the operation of Hiller Garage. Shortly thereafter, they owned and operated "Granville Service Agency" Paying and Receiving Station for the People's State Bank of Velva, and sold insurance. The family moved to Elgin in 1963 and then to Deer River, Minn., Randall, Minn., Velva and Glen Ullin, where Homer continued in the banking and insurance business. He retired in 1991 and had made his home in Glen Ullin for the past 32 years.

Homer was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Lions Club and American Legion Post, all in Glen Ullin. He enjoyed fishing especially trips to Canada for 35 years. He drove car 66 at the NoDak Speedway for several years.

Homer's loving family includes: his wife of 61 years Doris; sons, Terry Hiller of Honolulu, and Greg (Anne) Hiller of San Antonio; grandchildren, Payton and Preston Hiller; sister, Ardell (Stener) Hillerud of Granville; brother, Junior (Gladys) Hiller of Granville; sister-in-law, Pat Hiller; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Homer was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Vickie; sisters, Arlyce Pennington and Alvina Brunner; and brother, Johnny Hiller.

Funeral service: Monday, June 29, 2009, at 11 a.m. in First Lutheran Church, Granville.

Burial: with military honors will be in the Granville Community Cemetery.

Visitation: Today from noon until 5 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
