Strong storms, tornadoes sweep through Dakotas

POSTED: June 26, 2009

BISMARCK (AP) - Storms spawned two tornadoes in southwest North Dakota and as many as five in southeast South Dakota. Hail hit both states, strong winds downed power lines in South Dakota and a twister in North Dakota's Stark County destroyed several farm buildings.

National Weather Service meteorologists on Thursday morning said there were no immediate reports of major damage from the Wednesday night South Dakota twisters in the Sioux Falls and Mitchell areas. Meteorologist Richard Ryrholm said hail two inches in diameter damaged car windows in Artesian. There also were reports of downed power lines near Colome, and flooded roads near Douglas.

Perry Emch was in a tractor in a field when a tornado hit his farmstead south of Belfield.

''I saw tin flying, stuff flying,'' he said. ''I saw it touch down. It was huge.''

Six buildings, including three barns, were leveled.

Emch's sister, Connie Fulton, said her father was in his vehicle when the twister struck. The pickup truck was lifted off the ground and three windows were shattered, she said.

No people were hurt, but Emch said several lambs and chickens were killed.
