Hilman Ulland, 76, Granville, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in a Fargo hospital.

Hilman was born on June 11, 1933, a son of Edwin and Anna (Illehaugen) Ulland in Mayville. He lived with his family in Portland, N.D., until his graduation from Portland High School in 1951. He attended Mayville State University and received his teaching degree in 1955. He went to work in Pekin.

In the spring of 1956, Hilman was drafted into the Army. He proudly served his country, stationed in Germany for two years. He was honorably discharged in 1958. Following his discharge he returned to Pekin.

In June 1963, he was united in marriage to Charlene Johnson in Pekin. They lived in Pekin and then moved to McVille in 1964, where they taught school. In 1966, they moved to Granville, where Hilman served as principal until his retirement in 1993. Charlene died Jan. 22, 2004. Hilman continued to live in Granville.

Hilman was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Granville. He was also very active with the Granville American Legion Post No. 155, serving as post adjutant for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, attending sporting events and watching sporting events on TV, playing cards and gardening.

Those who shared in his life: sons, Douglas (Tami) Ulland, Minto, Scott Ulland, Portland, N.D., John (Tracy) Ulland, Velva; six grandchildren, Marisa, Grand Forks, Ryan, Haley and Brock, Minto, Emily and Eric, Velva; one sister, Avis (Art) Grandalen, Mayville; sisters-in-law, Jean Ann Ulland, Hatton, and Grace Ulland, Heber City, Utah; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hilman was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Charlene; siblings, Milnor, Alvin, Sidney, Andy, Manvil, Ervin, Marion and Katherine.

Funeral service: Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Granville.

Burial: Granville Community Cemetery, Granville.

Prayer service: Today, June 26, at 7 p.m. in Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot.

Visitation: Today, June 26, from noon to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
