Concert planned to debut CD
By DAILY NEWS STAFFWILLISTON -- Williston native Eldon Johnson will debut his latest compact disc during a concert June 27 at 7 p.m. at the Virgil Syverson Performance Center in Harmon Park, Williston. He will be accompanied by Josh Thompson on bass and vocals, Mike Christl on percussion and harmonica, and Williston's Wayne Colebank. His style has been described as a "unique concoction of contemporary country, rock, Americana, bluegrass and folk." The event will be the official CD release concert for his newest album, "The Other Side."
Johnson will play in Harmon Park the following weekend during the annual Hometown Williston Celebration. His concert there will be July 4 at 1:15 p.m. He is also planning a concert at the Old School Bed and Breakfast in Arnegard (www.oldschoolbb.com) at 7 p.m. Sept. 5.
Johnson, who was born and raised in Williston, began writing songs at the age of 17. While in grade school he had been a first-chair drummer and percussionist. He continued his musical endeavors while attending the University of North Dakota, where he obtained a master's degree in physical therapy in 1995. Since then, he has continued playing music throughout the upper Midwest and made multiple trips to Nashville and Austin. Johnson formed the band, True North, with Jim Ed Hodges. True North obtained immediate success. On their first attempt, the duo became the North Dakota and South Dakota State Champions in the 2003 Colgate Country Showdown. That success prompted the release of their debut CD, "Down The Road," in April 2006. Johnson's contributions to the album include lead and harmony vocals, acoustic guitar, and all of the drums and percussion as well as self-producing the album and writing 12 of the 14 songs.
Johnson currently lives in Fargo and works as contemporary music coordinator at Faith Lutheran Church in West Fargo.
