Benda Spokely, 96, Minot, formerly of Glenburn, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2009, at Trinity Homes in Minot.
Benda Pauline Mogard was born Aug. 5, 1912, a daughter of Peter and Annie (Mogard) Mogard, on the Mogard family farmstead, located in Margaret Township of Ward County, near Wolseth. She was raised on the family farm and educated at Wolseth Country School.
Benda married Silas E. Spokely Sept. 3, 1933, in Williston. They made their home on the Mogard family farmstead. They farmed small grains and raised livestock. Silas passed away Feb. 6, 1975. She continued to reside on the farmstead until 2007, when she moved into Trinity Homes in Minot. The family farmstead is now being occupied by her son, Harlan, as well as her grandson, Chad Spokely.
She was a former member of the Nidaros Lutheran Church, near Wolseth, and its ladies aid group until the church closed. She then became a member of the Deering Lutheran Church and its ladies aid group before most recently becoming a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot. She was also a member of the Deering and Glenburn senior citizens clubs and had served on the Wolseth School Board.
She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, baking, cooking, playing cards, bingo and singing.

Surviving family includes: son and daughter-in-law, Harlan and Doris Spokely, rural Glenburn; stepdaughter, Betty (Melvin) Thiel, Rugby; former daughter-in-law, Beverly Hauge, Minot; grandchildren, Chad (Jodi) Spokely, rural Glenburn, Tange (Larry) Stone, Surrey, Michelle (Terry) Giesen, Minot, Sheri (Steve) Factor, Pickerington, Ohio, and Barb Spokely, Minot; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren; 25 stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Benda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Silas; son, LeRoy Spokely; stepson, Dayton Brandt; twin sister, Christina Mogard; and brothers, Johnny Mogard and Alvin Mogard.
Funeral: Friday, May 29, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot.
Interment: Friday at 3:45 p.m. at Nidaros Lutheran Cemetery, near Wolseth.
Visitation: Thursday, May 28, from noon to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials: Memorials are preferred to Nidaros Lutheran Cemetery, rural Wolseth.
