Ida Schock Narum

June 7, 1913-May 14, 2009

POSTED: May 19, 2009

Ida Schock Narum, 95, Glen Ullin, formerly of Garrison, died Thursday, May 14, 2009, in a Glen Ullin nursing home.

Ida was born June 7, 1913, to Emmanuel and Elizabeth (Schwartz) Eslinger in McLean County where she was raised, baptized, confirmed and educated. Ida married Theodore "Ted" Schock on July 28, 1930. They made their home and farmed northeast of Garrison for 12 years. They then moved into Garrison where they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Ted died in 1965 and Ida continued to live in Garrison. She married Karl Narum of Douglas in 1969. Karl resides at the McLean Manor in Garrison.

In all her years, Ida worked at hospitals, did lots of babysitting, and caring for the elderly. She also cooked at the Sigma Sigma Sorority House in Minot. She loved playing cards, quilting and was an avid gardener, who was especially known for her flowers. She enjoyed traveling and entertaining her family, friends and relatives. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church, belonging to the Naomi Circle, ladies aid and civic club. Ida retired at age 78 due to sight problems.

In 1994 she moved into the Quinco Apartments in Garrison. Apparently she wasn't quite ready to retire and moved back into her home less than a year later. She later moved to the McLean Manor and Benedictine Living Center, both in Garrison, before moving to a private care facility in Washburn, and most recently to Marion Manor Healthcare Center in Glen Ullin.

Ida is survived by a daughter, Leona "Lee" M. (Erwin) Bitz, Bismarck; two sons, Dennis E. (Elaine) Schock, Kenmare, Vernon T. (Georgia) Schock, Fargo; two brothers, Arthur (Clarice) and Samuel Eslinger, all of Garrison; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ted; daughter, Arlene Zietz; five sisters; seven brothers; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services: Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church in Garrison. Please note the time change of the funeral. The time was different in her funeral notice in Monday's edition of The Minot Daily News.

Burial: Garrison City Cemetery.

Visitation: Today from 3 to 8 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the First Congregational Church in Garrison.
