Louie Herr
Oct. 23, 1921-April 28, 2009Louie Herr, 87, Minot, formerly of Sawyer, died on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in a Velva nursing home.
Louie was born Oct. 23, 1921, the son of August and Tillie (Hoffer) Herr near McClusky. He attended country school in Harris Township at the Herr School No. 2.
Louie entered into active duty service with the U.S. Army on Dec. 18, 1942. He honorably served his country in the North African-Mediterranean-European Theater of World War II. He received a number of decorations and medals and received his honorable discharge in 1946.
Louie returned to North Dakota and was united in marriage to Luella Faul on Oct. 23, 1949, near Sawyer. They made their home on the family farm near Sawyer, in Iota Flat Township of Ward County in 1950, where they raised small grains and Hereford cattle. They moved to Minot in 1984, but maintained their farming interests south of Sawyer throughout the years, until he retired at the age of 80. Luella died Jan. 1, 1998. Louie became a resident of Edgewood Vista in June 2004.
Louie was a member of the Minot American Legion. He enjoyed gardening, trapping, hunting and fishing. Louie loved to do woodworking projects, especially building furniture for his children and grandchildren. He always kept his sense of humor and enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
His loving family includes: children, Jill (David) Hovde, rural Epping, Joyce (Rod) James, rural Turtle Lake, and Johnny Herr, rural Sawyer; grandchildren, LeAnn Hovde, Epping, Sara (Duane) Faulkner, Epping, Amber James, Grand Forks, and Rhea James, Bismarck; sisters: Ida Neff, McClusky, Bertha (Gerald) Boelter, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Alice (LeRoy) Lauer, McClusky, and Darlene (John) Finstad, Lake Park, Minn.; brother, Edwin (Louise) Herr, Bismarck; sisters-in-law, Emma Herr, Garrison, and Doris Lawson, Phoenix; along with several nieces and nephews.
Louie was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Luella; and brothers, Alfred, Reuben and Clarence Herr.
Funeral service: Saturday, May 2, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Bible Fellowship Church, Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: Today from 2 to 7 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
