Who’s against the EFCA?
Mike Muscha, Enderlin
Who's against the Employee Free Choice Act? Big businesses, of course. They continue to get bailouts while the rest of us get sold out. Here in North Dakota the misguided state Chamber of Commerce is doing their dirty work. It doesn't even make sense.
Small businesses are indeed the true engine of job creation in our country, as they should be. But what drives that engine? Consumer spending, which stands to grow from increased union membership with passage of the Employee Free Choice Act. This is about leveling the playing field with the big corporations that have run roughshod over our economy for decades.
The way for small businesses to survive is for working families to have buying power so that we can spend it at their businesses. A recent study showed that even a modest increase in union membership would pump $61 million into the North Dakota economy. The way to do that is to pass the Employee Free Choice Act.

And, hey, who needs democracy and th private vote...that is so old school. As Jimmy Hoffa Jr said in his own words about the EFCA, and I quote from his mouth: "Since when is the secret ballot a basic tenet of democracy?" Well Jimmy, since 1775(the true start of the Revolutionary war, when Gen Thomas Gage's "redcoats" engaged with the Mass militia at Concord and Lexington and the "shot heard round the world") Democracy and the secret ballot...who needs em!

The union is good now for running companies into the ground, having the companies fall apart and then have the taxpayers continue to pay all of their benefits. Sweet gig if you can get it. My fil is a 30 year UAW worker; worked for GM and is now retired. He LOVES the union and flat out told us that he didn't care about who paid his bennies, as long as he kept them, because he "earned" them. He put himself on par with his own son(my dh) who's employer WAS the Federal Govt via over 20 years in the Air Force. He thinks he is "owed" more than my dh...sigh

Please, someone tell me what a Union is good for in this decade? Yeah back in the 1800’s when the government didn’t have a bunch of safety regulation and departments for the general working class, it was a good thing! But now it seems to have out lived its purpose and has become corrupt and money hungry! Look at the failure of the not so big three U.S. auto makers! I believe if the Unions hadn't pressed them so hard in concessions that they would not be on the brink of bankruptcy! So we should just say No to the Unions period! I am not part of a union, and never see myself talking a job where it would be required.

Having been an self employed carpenter, machine worker, and now working for Corp America - I would never join a union. I'll do my own thing and make it on my own. No thanks.

This bill will only open the door to deception, harassment, or worse actions. Reaching out to your elected officials is the best way to defeat this. It's not over yet. I was on the US Chamber's site and found this letter you can send to the folks in Congress if you have a spare moment: *******capwiz****/friendsoftheuschamber/issues/alert/?alertid=12426031. We need to make sure every worker has the freedom to choose what's best for themselves and their families.

And I will counter your video, with the following information: Dana Corp. employees in Albion, Indiana. Said United Auto Workers union organizers created an ugly and coercive environment, and many workers signed cards just to stop the constant pressure of union organizers harassing them at work, in the parking lot, and even at home. Wow, that sounds like something to look forward to. My fil is a retired UAW worker, and over the 21 years of my marriage, I have seen this attitude over and over..it is why my husband left home at 18 and joined the Air Force vs joining the union.

I am not big business, nor is my husband. We are against EFCA, so your premise is already flawed. Rasmussen poll...EIGHTY percent, yes 80%, would NOT join a union, even if their jobs were threatened. The only people that want a union are unions. My dh is a disabled veteran. It is offensive to think that his service should be rewarded by some union hack OR his employer standing over him, coming to our home, etc wanting to see how we voted.

Here is a short video on the Indianapolis hotel workers' struggle for equality. If the Employee Free Choice Act were passed, these workers would have their union tomorrow: ***********youtube****/watch?v=exBtVnZaWUk
