The Minot High School boys track and field team finished strong in the 2008 season.
The Magicians placed third at the Class A State Meet, their best finish of the spring.
The Magicians hope to build on that strong finish this spring, as they get their season started with the WDA Indoor Meet today in Bismarck.
"We have a nice group back," MHS head coach Barry Holmen said. "I think we have 10 or 11 returners from the state meet. Many aren't quite ready to compete because they're coming out of other sports, but it's a nice nucleus to build around."
Among those returners are senior runners Josh Beaudoin and Alex Wohl. The pair were part of both Minot High's state title teams in the 1,600 relay and the 3,200 relay.
"I think we're going to have some good quality and depth in the 400, 800 in the middle distance range," Holmen said. "We have half of those (state title) teams back. We should be able to make our relay teams very competitive."
Also returning in the hurdles will be senior Lee Greuel and junior Kent Luetzen. Greuel placed in both hurdle events at state last season.
Weather has kept the Magi indoors for the first three weeks of practice, but Holmen said the team has responded well to the indoor training.
"We're hoping the weather will continue improving and we can get out and compete," he said. "It's hard to train indoors for that long of a period. We're pleased with how things have gone so far. Kids have trained really hard in the weight room beacuse we haven't had a lot of options some days. That will pay off."
The Magicians have been traditionally strong in the throws and junior Ben Aasen should be among the state's top returners in the javelin.
Holmen believes the WDA Indoor will be good to set a baseline for the team to work from.
"I just think we need a meet to let the young kids know what it's all about," he said. "The training hasn't even been close to sufficient to make us realy sharp, but there's a handful or kids that have been working out all winter. We just want to see where we're at. We just don't know about our conditioning base and our readiness level and I don't imagine any other schools will be ready either."
The numbers are strong for the Magicians again this year, as Holmen said there are 90 student-athletes out for the team.
"We're over 90 right now and waiting to see if a couple kids from the winter sports team join us, so we're right in the 90-95 range," he said.
