JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Minot State University's Ulysses S. Dalton II fought a sore hamstring to complete three events and finished tied for 13th overall here Friday at the 2009 NAIA National Indoor Championships.

Dalton II tied with Azusa Pacific's Devyn Wills with a total score of 4,422 at the Memorial Center.

"He scored his second highest total ever and has his second highest day two total," Beavers head coach Stu Melby said. "All things considered with the injury, he did really well."

Dalton II opened his day with another personal best time for the Heptahlon with a time of 8.76 seconds. The MSU sophomore had his four personal bests of the meet in the pole vault with a height of 11-3 3/4. He closed his day and fifth heptahlon with a time of 3:06.51 in the 1,000 meter race.

"Overall for the competition we had four personal bests out or seven events, so overall he did fantastic," Melby said. "He had the sixth best time in the hurdles and tied for 10th in the vault. He handled the injury very well, it just hurt him in the jumps and he was feeling in the 1,000."

MSU freshman Khaldon Evans edged a university record in the men's 400 meters with a time of 49.50. Evans' came into the event ranked 20th, but his time places him in 13th.

"He placed a lot higher than he came in ranked and he broke the MSU record by a quarter of a second," Melby said. "The record was a 49.74 set I think in 1994. Anytime you can set a record and place higher than you came in, you've had a good day."

Also competing in the 400 was Minot native and MSU senior Devin Hiller. Hiller placed 21st in the semifinals with a time of 50.44 seconds. Johnny Lester currently sits in 28th in the men's 60 meters with his time of 7.08 seconds.

"All four of those guys worked hard today and they did very well," Melby said.
