SPEARFISH, S.D. - Minot State University freshman Kayla Montgomery broke the Beavers' 55-meters indoor record with a time of 7.41 seconds to highlight three records on the second day of the Dakota Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field meet here Saturday.

Montgomery also shaved time off her 200 record with a 26.58 set earlier this season. MSU's men's multi-event athlete Ulysses Dalton, II pushed a previous record of 4,318 in the heptathlon to 4,635. Montgomery in the 55, Dalton in the heptathlon and Alissa Klose in the triple jump brought home conference titles. Montgomery, Klose and Julia Williams in the shot put all qualified for the NAIA national meet.

"I couldn't ask for much more," MSU head coach Stu Melby said. "For the weekend, we had a total of 23 personal bests, three of those were school records and three qualified for nationals. We worked really hard and we had some people in different events. Adrian Smith was in all three relays. Here's a sprinter running the 800 to help score some points. He didn't score as an individual, but was a part of 16 points in relays for the team."

MSU finished fourth in both the men's and women's team race scoring 79 points on the men's side and 70 on the women's.

"Everybody was working together, that was the mentality we had this weekend," Melby said. "The women scored the most points and had the highest finish in seven years. The men were fourth last year, but that was the highest in six years. We are on the right track with the team and program."

Klose was leading the triple jump on her final attempt and was able to get the extra inches to qualify for nationals. After Montgomery broke the school record in the preliminaries of the 55, she lowered her time in the finals to win the title.

"Kayla was excited in the prelims getting the record, but she got angry and ran her heart out in the finals to go two hundredths faster," Melby said. "She was really aggressive in the 200 as well. Alissa new the mark she needed and came through on her last jump. And, Julia was ranked seventh or eighth in the shot and kept working. She was a little disappointed after the weight throw where she didn't quite do what she wanted.

"We had a lot of personal bests and had some big competition competitors."

Along with titles, MSU also got runner-up finishes from Alex Boyeff in the shot put and Montgomery in the 200 and third-place performances from Danielle Warren in the pole vault and the Beavers men's 1,600 and 800 relays.
