Animal shelter honors loved ones

Souris Valley Animal Shelter Bells and Stars remember, honor pets and loved ones

The Souris Valley Animal Shelter in Minot held a lighting ceremony Saturday in honor of pets and loved ones. For $5, individuals purchased a bell, in honor of pets and loved ones still living, or a star, in memory of those who have passed on. The bells and stars decorate a lighted garland in the animal shelter's lobby.

"It's become kind of a Christmas tradition for some people. We have in the neighborhood of 100 bells and stars," said Susan Wagers, executive assistant for the Souris Valley Animal Shelter.

At the ceremony, students from Eureka school played the bells before and during the reading of names written on the bells and stars. Guests at the ceremony also snacked on hot cider and treats.

Individuals can still purchase bells and stars at the animal shelter throughout this month. A form can be accessed on the animal shelter's Web site, or individuals can visit the animal shelter.
